WIP3: Wonder Woman Redesign

Hey all,

In the "Like I don't have enough stuff to do already" category, I decided to enter a drawing contest on Lesean Thomas' forum. The project calls for a redesign of WonderWoman by Friday, so I'll be posting up the progress pics as I work my way through this beast

- I spent a good chunk of my spare time yesterday thinking about what makes a classic Wonder Woman pose. What is it about the way that she holds her body that says "Wonder Woman". This is something that Zub talks about a lot in Character design. So I didn't think about the details of the design, only what would read clearly as Wonder Woman, no matter how she was dressed.

II: Rough Pencils
- So once I had decided on a classic WW pose: lifting up an enemy tank. I sketched out the whole thing on illustration board to see how the final design held up at full size. I'm pretty pleased with the result. I tried to push the sense of weight pressing down into her right leg and her body turning to lift the multi-tonne tank above her head. She's not Superman, so she has to strain.

The next stage is to figure out how to push the design even further. The premise of the project is a character redesign. That can mean two things:
1. A redesign of the costume and features of the character (ie. hair length, style, etc...)
2. A Re-IMAGINING of the character. So what if WW was a japanese warrior in the feudal period? The problem with this type of approach is that you can very quickly move so far away from the original basis of the character and create something totally different that doesn't feel like WonderWoman anymore. It's a different character and I think if that happens then you've missed the mark of the design.

For my approach, I'm going to go for a mix of both worlds. I'm redesigning her costume and hair, as well as re-imagining WonderWoman as a character, but I'm trying to stay very true to the original design elements, so that it should read like WonderWoman from a parallel universe.

Next up, final lines (which probably won't be for a bit because I've still got hella work to do for next week)!

BTW, this monster is due by Friday June 5!

Back in Business

Hey all, I haven't forgotten about the blog, just been really busy with non-bloggable projects and such. I plan to be much more active around here with more of our character design stuff.
These two are from last week:
1. Character design: First rough sketch for my Pirate project
2. Storyboarding: Original title card design for a fictional television production
3. The first rough development sketches from my first film (untitled...for now!)
